PORTLAND, OR—Sources close to the situation confirmed Tuesday that the entire act of local mime Jean-Luc Babineaux is, upon close inspection, performative.
“At first we thought he was genuinely trapped in a box,” said witness Dana Kowalski, 34, who watched Babineaux struggle against invisible walls for nearly six minutes. “But the more we looked into it, the more it seemed like he was just doing it for attention. He could get out anytime he wanted.”
Investigators noted a clear pattern: the rope Babineaux appears to pull doesn’t actually exist, the wind he leans into has never been corroborated by local meteorologists, and the stairs he descends behind a park bench don’t actually descend.
“Every single thing this man does is a performance,” said one critic, who reviewed hours of footage. “We could not identify one authentic gesture. Even his silence feels staged.”
The Portland Parks Department, which issues busking permits, announced it “takes authenticity very seriously” and said it would look into the allegations of fraud.
Babineaux declined to comment.
He later issued a written statement that read, “I’m a fucking mime, you knob,” then mimed a tear rolling down his cheek—an act experts immediately flagged as disingenuous.
