KETTLE MORAINE, WIS. — Gary Pofahl, 41, a freelance disc golf caddy operating primarily out of the Kettle Moraine State Forest South Course in Eagle, Wisconsin, confirmed Thursday that he is not ruling anything out.

“I’m just keeping my options open,” said Pofahl, who has carried discs professionally for nine years and whose LinkedIn profile lists his occupation as “Disc Management Specialist.”

Pofahl made the statement to no one in particular near the basket on hole 7, a 340-foot par 3 with a slight dogleg left that he described as “honestly pretty forgiving if you know what you’re doing,” which he does.

He has not elaborated on what the options are.

Pofahl’s moment of reflection came during the back nine of a casual round he was caddying for Dale Remmert, 53, a periodontist from Waukesha who plays every Thursday and refers to himself as a “disc golfer first, dentist second,” a claim his receptionist disputes.

Remmert said he did not notice anything unusual about Pofahl’s demeanor during the round.

“Gary’s very professional about it,” Remmert said. “He handed me the Innova Champion Destroyer on 14 without me even asking. That’s instinct. You can’t teach that.”

Pofahl acknowledged the Destroyer selection was correct.

“It was the right disc,” he said. “That’s not the issue.”

He did not specify what the issue is.

Friends say Pofahl has seemed contemplative since February, when he attended his nephew’s college graduation in Oshkosh and spent most of the reception near the shrimp cocktail not saying much. His sister, Tammy, described him as “probably fine, just thinking.”

Pofahl holds an associate degree in business administration from Waukesha County Technical College, which he has described as “still relevant.”

He applied in 2019 to become an assistant pro at the Quarry course in Sussex but withdrew his application before the second interview, citing “a scheduling conflict” that several people close to him believe did not exist.

As of Thursday afternoon, Pofahl had updated his availability on the disc golf caddy scheduling platform CaddyLink to show openings on Tuesday and Friday mornings, which observers noted is more availability than he has posted in several years.

When asked about the change, Pofahl said he was “just being flexible.”

The Kettle Moraine State Forest South Course has 18 holes, is free to play, and does not technically require a caddy. Pofahl is allegedly the only caddy currently operating there on a regular basis.

He said he’s going to give it until fall.
